Matthew “Matt” Fare – President
Matt graduated from North Bend High School in 1958. He joined the Air Force and was trained as a Fire protection specialist. Returning home in 1989, he joined the Coos Bay Fire Department as a volunteer, then was hired full time in 1996 as a Firefighter/EMT, continuing to serve his community. In 2003 Matt joined the Army National Guard and was trained as an infantry soldier. He served in Iraq and was also deployed to New Orleans for Katrina relief efforts. He continues to support his community by helping Veterans an way he can. Matt served as the past President of SOVO and a Veterans Service Officer.
Thomas Benz – Treasurer
Tom is a 1965 graduate of Lebanon Oregon High School. A US Army veteran 1966-1969 with Vietnam Service in 1968-1969. He holds an associate degree in criminal justice from Southwestern Community College, was with the Oregon State Police 69-1997. After retirement he served as intern police chief of, Myrtle Point, Oregon, a self employed private investigator, and a data base contractor for Oregon State Emergency Service 911. Tom is a past treasurer for 501c7 Coos Bay Yacht Club. Tom is now fully retired, serves as the SOVO Treasurer, board member, and is an accredited veteran’s service officer. Has a keen desire to assist his fellow Veterans in healing with the VA Health and Pension System, especially those dealing with PTSD and injuries from service in a combat.
Carolyn Hebenstreich – Director
Carolyn was born in Livermore, California. She worked for VA Medical Center in Livermore for twelve years then accepted a job as a veteran’s service officer with Stanislaus County Veterans Services in 1989. Carolyn was promoted to manager of Stanislaus County Veteran Services in 1999 and retired in 2012, stayed on part-time until December of 2014. She is married to a US Marine who served from 1964-1968, including service in Vietnam. While working for the county she held Service Officer accreditations with the following organizations: US & California Departments of Veteran Affairs, National Assoc. of County Veterans Service Officers, VFW, DAV, Purple Heart, AMVETS, American Retired Assoc, and American Legion.
Neil Ornstein – Director
Neil attended S.F.V. State College and Valley College, in the San Fernando Valley, majoring in business and journalism. He served in the U.S.M.C. Reserve and the California Air National Guard. Prior to retiring Neil was a business owner, California Peace Officer and licensed California real estate broker. He lives in Lake Havasu City in the winter and Lakeside, Oregon in the summer. Neil is the recruiting Sergeant for Detachment 1042 of the Marine Corps League and a member of Devil Dogs, Detachment 757 of the Marine Corps League at Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He has volunteered at SOVO since 2013, and does computer maintenance and other tasks as required.
Carl Pearson – Director
Carl was born in Tonopah, Nevada. He came to Oregon in 1956 where he worked various jobs such as ranch hand, saw mills, dairy farms etc. He moved to Coos Bay and worked for Georgia Pacific Corporation from 1959 till 1965.
Carl served in the military 1965 thru 1967 with the Army Infantry and is a combat veteran of Viet Nam. He became a journey man sheet metal worker in 1972, retiring in 2001.
Carl taught part time as an apprentice metal worker instructor at Southwestern Oregon College from 1977-1981 and at Lane Community College from 1981-1984. Carl served as Union member on Oregon State Joint Apprenticeship Committee, 1983-2000. He served on Oregon State Governor Ad Hoc Committee to set standards for state indentured sheet metal apprentices.
Carl enjoys assisting his fellow veterans, especially combat veterans.
Brandon Henderson – Director
Brandon graduated from Evergreen High School in Vancouver, Washington. He served in the Marine Corps from 1997 to 2001. Brandon was an anti-tank assault specialist with an overseas assignment in Japan. He is the youngest member of our board of directors, has a wife and child at home, is a member of the emergency dive team and a Sea Cadet leader. He sits on the SOVO board because he wants to assist other veterans and their family members.
Chuck Reinas – Director
Chuck is a retired Coos County resident, A US Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran. His background is in accounting.

Coos County Oregon has more than 8,000 veterans and one County Veterans Service Officer.
